Sunnyside Up

bacon and eggs ornament

The Sunnyside Up ornament has been extremely popular this year at Trendy Tree. The ornament from Old World Christmas has bacon and eggs on one side and a smiling sunshine on the other.

According to Wikpedia, the full breakfast traditionally comprises several fried foods, usually including bacon and eggs, and is popular throughout the British Isles and other parts of the English-speaking world. The name “Bacon and eggs” was made popular by Edward Bernays in the 1920s. To promote sales of bacon, he conducted a survey of physicians and reported their recommendations that people eat hearty breakfasts. He sent the results of the survey to 5,000 physicians, along with publicity touting bacon and eggs as a hearty breakfast.

A full North American breakfast (Canada and USA) consists of eggs, a “breakfast meat” such as bacon, ham, or sausage, scrapple, pork roll, spam or even steak or country fried steak; fried potatoes such as hash browns or home fries; toasted white, wheat, rye or some other bread, such as English muffins or bagels; fruit or fruit juice, and tea or, usually, coffee. It is often referred to as a “country breakfast” in many areas of the Midwestern United States. The terms “fry” and “full breakfast” are not generally used in North America, though hotels generally distinguish between a light “continental breakfast” and a hot, cooked breakfast.

In the Southern United States the meal is typically known as a “big breakfast” or “Sunday breakfast” and may add or replace elements of the above with: grits, toast or biscuits with white gravy, pancakes, cinnamon rolls or similar sweet pastries.

psstttt……in Mississippi there is also such as thing as “chocolate gravy”…….but I’ve  never made it)))))

The Happy Teddy bear makes a wonderful keepsake baby gift. In fact, the reason we only have white in stock right now is because one of our loyal customers is using all the tan ones to welcome their new grandson! The ornament are being used as a favor or small thank you for friends and family that are attending a baby shower in honor of the new mom to be. Tool Set - Perfect Gift for Your Little Bob the Builder....or Destroyer...

This Three Piece Tool Set from Old World has simply the most unique ornaments! It includes a Claw Hammer, Crescent Wrench and Pipe Wrench. All these ornaments are also sold individually or in this set. The box is more of just a carton rather than a keepsake box so you might want to package the ornaments with a Tonka truck, tractor or little wooden tool chest. Toys for now......keepsakes for later)))

The ornaments are uniquely detailed with a bit of history on each hang tag.

The Crescent Wrench: The crescent wrench was invented in 1907. The name refers to its shaped head and it is a basic in most toolboxes. In fact, Charles Lindberg said -- all he brought on his 1927 solo trans-Atlantic flight were "gasoline, sandwiches, a bottle of water, and a Crescent Wrench and some pliers."

The Claw Hammer: The Claw Hammer is one of the oldest and most used tools. From construction sites to home projects, they are a true necessity. Carpenters view hammers as a personal tool, an extension of themselves, and are loyal to their favorite.

The Pipe Wrench: The Pipe Wrench, or Stillson wrench, was patented in 1869. It is an adjustable wrench used for turning soft iron pipes and fittings. With its teeth angled in the direction of the turn, its jaws become tighter with any forward pressure on the handle. It is a must for any tool box!

Old World Christmas ornaments are very educational in addition to adding to your holiday cheer!

Visit us at Trendy Tree and browse though the hundreds of selections of Old World Christmas ornaments....you'll find plenty of ornaments to fill your tool box, craft basket, or trunk!

The Headless Horseman

Halloween Party Idea: Have your best storyteller repeat this tale from Washington Irving' "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and present your little listeners with an Old World Christmas Skull Head at the end of the tale.....creepy)))
Skull 26021
One cold winter night, early in the New Year, a certain Dutchman left the tavern in Tarrytown and started walking to his home in the hollow nearby. His path led next to the old Sleepy Hollow cemetery where a headless Hessian soldier was buried. At midnight, the Dutchman came within site of the graveyard. The weather had warmed up during the week, and the snow was almost gone from the road. It was a dark night with no moon, and the only light came from his lantern.

The Dutchman was nervous about passing the graveyard, remembering the rumors of a galloping ghost that he had heard at the tavern. He stumbled along, humming to himself to keep up his courage. Suddenly, his eye was caught by a light rising from the ground in the cemetery. He stopped, his heart pounding in fear. Before his startled eyes, a white mist burst forth from an unmarked grave and formed into a large horse carrying a headless rider.

The Dutchman let out a terrible scream as the horse leapt toward him at a full gallop. He took to his heels, running as fast as he could, making for the bridge since he knew that ghosts and evil spirits did not care to cross running water. He stumbled suddenly and fell, rolling off the road into a melting patch of snow. The headless rider thundered past him, and the man got a second look at the headless ghost. It was wearing a Hessian commander's uniform.

The Dutchman waited a good hour after the ghost disappeared before crawling out of the bushes and making his way home. After fortifying himself with schnapps, the Dutchman told his wife about the ghost. By noon of the next day, the story was all over Tarrytown. The good Dutch folk were divided in their opinions. Some thought that the ghost must be roaming the roads at night in search of its head. Others claimed that the Hessian soldier rose from the grave to lead the Hessian soldiers in a charge up nearby Chatterton Hill, not knowing that the hill had already been taken by the British.

Whatever the reason, the Headless Horseman continues to roam the roads near Tarrytown on dark nights from that day to this.

Don't have a great storyteller? Here's a link where you can listen to the story. The Headless Horseman as told by S. E. Schlosser

Halloween Ornaments

A great item to package and give as a Halloween treat instead of candy, is an Old World Christmas Ornament. Here's a few suggestions for your Halloween tree!

The Raven 18019

Ravens are some of the most intelligent birds and are able to mimic many sounds. Because of this they are considered wise and to possess powers of prophesy. In the Bible, ravens fed the prophet Elijah, and so they are considered to be symbols of God's providing.

The Lil' Goblin is new for 2010 and comes in a creamy white color which gives it an antique like look. A very sweet little ornament. The hang tag has this information: Jack O'Lanterns come from the Irish legend of Stingy Jack; a man so mean the devil wouldn't let him into hell. He was forced to roam the earth using a carved turnip with a piece of coal for a lantern and was called "Jack of the Lantern." Thus began the carving of pumpkins as Jack O'Lanterns to place in windows to scare away evil spirits.

A great way to package your ornaments to give as a treat is to use our new clear cello rolls with pumpkins. Nestle the ornament in a bed of shredded kraft paper on a square of cello and gather up around the ornament, tie with natural raffia or orange and black ribbon. Makes a really "sweet" treat .....with no tooth decay!

Squash

The new Squash ornaments from Old World this year are the Acorn and Butternut Squash. Both are very beautiful and realistic looking ornaments.

Decorate your Thanksgiving table with a cornucopia filled with squashes, vegetable and nut ornaments. Use wood wool or Spanish Moss as a filler to cushion the ornaments and let them just spill out on the center of the table.

Here's a great recipe from Southern Living using the Butternut and Acorn squash. Beautiful dish for your Thanksgiving  table.

  • 1  (2- to 3-lb.) butternut squash
  • 1  (2- to 3-lb.) spaghetti squash
  • 1  (1- to 2-lb.) acorn squash
  • 1/4  cup  butter
  • 2  tablespoons  honey
  • 1  teaspoon  salt
  • 1/4  teaspoon  pepper
Preheat oven to 400°. Cut butternut squash, spaghetti squash, and acorn squash in half lengthwise, and remove seeds. Place squash, cut sides up, on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Microwave butter and honey at HIGH 1 minute or until melted; stir until blended. Brush cut sides of squash with butter mixture. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake, uncovered, 1 hour or until tender; let stand 10 minutes. Cut into large pieces and serve.

Now, if you live in the south, here's a recipe that you will find on Sunday dinner tables in the summertime!

Squash Casserole
  • 2  pounds  yellow squash, sliced (frozen will work also)
  • 3/4  cup  chopped onion
  • 1  tablespoon margarine or butter
  • 2  tablespoons  all-purpose flour
  • 1  cup milk
  • 3/4  cup  (3 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2  teaspoon  salt
  • 1/4  teaspoon  pepper
  • Cooking spray
  • 1/2  cup  soft breadcrumbs, toasted or crushed saltines
Cook squash and onion in a small amount of boiling water 10 to 12 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Drain; set aside.

Preheat oven to 350°.

Melt margarine in a medium, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add flour; cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Gradually add milk; cook, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat; add cheese, salt, and pepper, stirring until cheese melts. Add squash mixture; stir well.

Spoon squash mixture into a shallow 1 1/2-quart baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle squash mixture evenly with breadcrumbs or cracker crumbs. Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes or until mixture is thoroughly heated.

French Fries

Ornament looks just like a red container of shoestring french fries from McDonald's!

French Fries are popular for their taste and convenience. They are a favorite side dish, especially with hamburgers. Millions of french fries are eaten in the U. S. each year! Whether found in fancy restaurants, fast food joints, or at home at the dinner table, French Fries are a universal favorite.

Who among us has not heard that famous question...."would you like fries with that?"

Recipe for French Fries

  • 4  pounds  Idaho potatoes
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
Peel and cut Idaho potatoes into 1/2-inch-wide strips.
Pour oil to a depth of 4 inches in a Dutch oven, and heat to 375°. Fry potato strips in small batches in hot oil 12 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels. Salt to taste.

Tips: Once potatoes are cut, place in ice water for a while, drain well on paper towels before frying.

More Ornaments on the Way to Trendy Tree!

More of some of our long awaiting ornaments are in route this week! The Asparagus, Bass Drum and Chickadee.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some styles arrive sooner than others. All of the above ornaments are old styles, you would think there would always be plenty of those in stock. Go figure!

My reason for saying this, is if you're interested in something don't delay too long on making your purchase if it's one of those "perfect" for what you need items! In this day of the internet, you never know how many other potential buyers are looking at the same item! Christmas ornaments are an example of a product that retailers can't simply restock when they run out.

We have three customers who have been waiting on the Bass Drum for months now. Yes, they probably could have found it from another retailer, but they are loyal customers and willing to wait for our product to arrive. We appreciate our customers so much! There just isn't enough ways to show them. At Trendy Tree do we coupons frequently for discounts, free shipping etc, but being on online seller you just don't have that opportunity for customers to experience a warm smile or friendly handshake. How do you bottle that and give to your customers online? It's a dilemma.....

Bye Bye Little Ghost

Ice Scream Halloween Ornament
26024

White swirly ghost arising from an ice cream cone. Happy Halloween is written on the cone and decorated with a tiny black spider. This ornament is retired.....no more little ghost(((

Halloween has its origins in the ancient festival of Samhain, the Celtic New Year, when spirits were allowed to return to early to visit. Christianity incorporated this into All Hallow''s Eve, October 31, prior to All Saints Day. The Irish brought Halloween to America in the 1940's, with the tradition of dressing in costumes and playing pranks in the hopes of keeping the evil spirits away.

The Ruby Slipper

Great Wizard of Oz keepsake ornament. Who doesn't remember Dorothy clicking the heels of her ruby slippers together and saying "there's no place like home....there's no place like home."

(From Wikipedia) The ruby slippers are the shoes worn by Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) in the 1939 MGM movie The Wizard of Oz. Because of their iconic stature. they are now among the most treasured and valuable of film memorabilia. As was customary for important props, a number of pairs were made for the film, though no one knows exactly how many. Five pairs are known to have survived; one of these was stolen in 2005 and never recovered.

An original pair of ruby slippers used in The Wizard of Oz; now part of the Philip Samuels Collection.

In the film, Dorothy's house falls on the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her and freeing the Munchkins from her tyranny. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North magically puts the dead woman's ruby slippers on Dorothy's feet to protect her from the Witch's vengeful sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy knows the slippers are magical, but she is unaware of their specific powers. At the end of the film, Glinda reveals one of the slippers' abilities: Dorothy can return home to Kansas by simply clicking her heels three times and repeating, "There's no place like home."

The Ruby Slipper ornament is one of our most popular ornaments for sale at Trendy Tree. Customers buy them by the dozens. I hope they're not in line for retirement any time soon! Hope you're listening Old World Christmas!!

The Hungry Squirrel

The Hungry Squirrel Christmas ornament from Old World Christmas was purchased this week by a very nice customer named Linda. She seemed very excited that she had been able to find this ornament. It's a new ornament that just came out last year by Old World. The Hungry Squirrel is gray, and holding an acorn. The first version of the squirrel ornament is more of a reddish brown.

Known for its playfulness and bushy tail, the squirrel is found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Its tail can be used for balance, as a form of a parachute when falling from a high tree, or as a blanket in cold weather.

Linda sent me a couple of photos of the reason she had wanted the Hungry Squirrel.

These pics are just adorable!! He looks like he could have been the model for the ornament!

When someone takes time out of their busy day to share just a moment of their life, you haven't just made a sale for the day.....you have a new friend. I should have asked if this cute little fellow has a name! Will find out and get back to you)))

The Lobster Christmas Ornament

The Lobster is a most unusual creature. Not only is its skeleton on the outside of its body, but it listens with its legs, tastes with its antennae, and its teeth are in its stomach! But there is nothing odd about how it tastes. Steamed, boiled or baked, or served in chowder, Lobster is a delicious treat.

Lobsters are found in all oceans. They live on rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms from the shoreline to beyond the edge of the continental shelf. They generally live singly in crevices or in burrows under rocks.
They are invertebrates, with a hard protective exoskeleton. Like most arthropods, lobsters must molt in order to grow, which leaves them vulnerable. During the molting process, several species change color. Lobsters have 10 walking legs; the front two adapted to claws. *Wikipedia

The name Zucchini comes from the Italian word for small squash, zucchino. First found in Central American, Columbus brought seeds back from his travels. The Zucchini is a jewel among the summer squashes. Its sweet light flavor and delicate texture make it a summertime favorite.
