The Garden Tomato

old world christmas garden tomato
The Old World Christmas Garden Tomato is a unique ornament that is very popular with our customers. Any time we receive an order for several of an ornament, we’re always wondering……what are they going to use this ornament for??

Last year, the Garden Tomato was used as a nice gift to a group of super ladies that raised tomato plants to sell as a fund raiser for a local youth group to go to camp. This year we received an order for several Garden Tomatoes for a family gathering………a chili sauce fest)))

Emily Edmonds and several members of her family, meet each year to cook up a batch of their homemade chili sauce. Now, we’re not talking about a nice size pan on the stove inside the house. They cooked up 360 pounds of tomatoes, onions and pepper ……outside…..the real old fashioned way!

The Garden Tomato ornaments were given as keepsakes for this family gathering. Emily’s sister-in-law dated the ornaments with a gold pen “Chili Sauce 2011″ and these ornaments will still be around after those jars of chili sauce have been put to good use.

And yes, I tried to get the chili sauce recipe…..but it’s a closely guarded family secret))) Thank you Emily for sharing this wonderful story about families taking time away from their busy lives to spend time with each other, carrying on tradition ……. making memories…..and chili sauce)))

"Chaser" The Amazing Border Collie from South Carolina

Today while reading our local community paper, The Pontotoc Progress, which is published weekly, there was an article in the magazine insert about a border collier from South Carolina.

border collie christmas ornament
Old World Christmas Border Collie Ornament

The article said that “Chaser” a border collie in Spartanburg, knows the names of 1,022 different items, believed to be the largest vocabulary for any dog. His owner, John W. Pilley, a psychologist, spent four to five hours a day teaching the pooch the names of hundreds of toys, which she can fetch by name……….next week I’m sending my grand kids over for training…..they can’t find anything.

Ida B. Wells Arts and Crafts Festival and Birthday Celebration Holly Springs, MS

July 15-17, Holly Springs, MS.

Arts, crafts, creative dance, music, soul food and history. Eddie L. Smith Multipurpose Center. Banquet 7 pm July 16, 2011 Hudsonville Life Center.

A couple of years ago I visited the Ida B. Wells Museum in Holly Springs and it was a very interesting place. The folks who worked there were very enthusiastic and guided me through the tour. The museum is housed in an old antebellum home in Holly Springs.

Great information about Ms. Wells and the Museum history can be found at their website: Ida B. Wells Memorial Foundation

On my visit there, one of the artifacts I especially remember was an old cotton pick sack. It looked like about one of the 7 or 8 ft sacks. I wish I had taken a photograph of it and have looked high and low for a photo somewhere of a pick sack but haven’t found one. If you have one, I’d really appreciate it if you would share.
Old time crafts….quilting, hand sewn clothing…..art forms that will never go out of style)))

old world christmas quilt square christmas ornament
Old World Christmas has captured the art form of hand made quilts in this new Quilt Square Christmas ornament, just introduced in 2011.

The Hang Tag reads: As a creative and beautiful art form, quilting combines fabrics, shapes and threads to produce richly patterned products. In the old days, sample blocks were made as a way to record patterns. Women kept their own sample block collections to share and exchange patterns with neighbors and relatives.

Great keepsake for the quilter or for someone who has loving memories of handmade quilts. I have another Blog entry about my memories of old quilts….that feeling of heaviness as quilt after quilt was spread on top of the bed to keep us warm…..no squirming around in my grandmother’s bed……quilts were too heavy!

Give a Gift of Hot Chocolate!

Give a gift of hot chocolate this Christmas season. Found some great hot chocolate gifting ideas that you can put together to astound your friends and family. I take no credit for the beautiful creations, my only suggestion is to put a Christmas ornament with your gift to make it everlasting.

I was browsing on Tip Junkie and ran across the neatest idea for hot chocolate. Hot Chocolate on a Stick! Yes, a chunk of chocolate with homemade marshmallow…..looks delicious!

hot chocolate on a stick with marshmallow

Heather at Whipperberry.com created this most unusual treat. She has more photos that are stunning and recipes for both the chocolate chunk and marshmallow that look easy to follow. She even has a free printable label for packaging this sweet treat.

hot chocolate on a stick

You’ll want to visit whipperberry.com and plan on spending some time there……she has some great ideas, recipes and crafts.

Another hot chocolate gift idea was found at The Craft Nest. These little packages of hot chocolate mix are perfect for teacher gifts. Our teachers get so many gifts each year from their students that I think it’s better to give something disposable……I mean there are just so many knick-knacks that a teacher can keep….Give them something they can eat, drink or use up and be done with it)))

hot chocolate mix gift wrapper label
The Craft Nest used a purchased hot chocolate mix but spruced it up a bit with miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips and even mini peppermint candy canes. Ingredients were placed in 4″ clear cello bag and wrapper created with cutout window. Instructions are on the site and look simple to follow.

If you’d like to make your own Hot Chocolate Mix here’s a great recipe from the Food Network.

Hot Cocoa
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup cocoa (Dutch-process preferred)
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or more to taste
  • Hot water
Directions

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and incorporate evenly. In a small pot, heat 4 to 6 cups of water.
Fill your mug half full with the mixture and pour in hot water. Stir to combine. Seal the rest in an airtight container, keeps indefinitely in the pantry. This also works great with warm milk.

If you decide to make your own mix, just be sure to add a little tag with the instructions on how to reconstitute.

National Donut Day!

National Donut Day is the first Friday in June.
pink and white frosted donut
National Donut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy. Many American donut shops offer free donuts on Donut Day. The Salvation Army continues to use donuts as a fund raiser.

Here’s a recipe for donuts (or doughnuts as Betty Crocker says….) from my mother’s 1950′s cookbook. I remember them being delicious!

Favorite Doughnuts

Beat well: 4 egg yolks (or 2 whole eggs)
Beat in:  1 cup sugar; 2 tbsp. soft shortening
Stir in:   3/4 cup thick buttermilk or sour milk
Sift together and stir in:  3 1/2 cups sifted GOLD MEDAL Flour; 2 tsp. baking powder; 1 tsp. soda; 1/2 tsp. salt; 1/4 tsp. nutmeg; 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Chill dough 2 hours. Heat fat while rolling and cutting doughnuts.
1. Turn part of dough onto floured cloth-covered board. Keep the rest chilled. Turn dough to lightly cover with flour.
2.  Roll out gently 1/3″ thick. Cut with floured sharp doughnut cutter. Take board close to kettle to transfer doughnuts easily.
3.  Lift doughnuts on wide spatula, slide quickly into hot fat. Fry as many at a time as can be turned easily.
4.  Turn doughnuts as they rise to surface and show a little color. Fry about 3 min. to completely brown on both sides.
5.  Life from fat with long fork. Do not prick doughnuts. Drain over kettle, place on absorbent paper in warm place.

Note: Keep fat to use again: Clarify fat with raw potato in it (4 slices to 1 qt). When fat bubbles, strain into jar or can through 2 or 3 thicknesses of cheesecloth, over wire strainer. (The potato absorbs flavors and collects sediment, the remainder settling to the bottom. ) Keep in refrigerator in light-proof, tight, covered container.

Serve plain, sugared or glazed.

Note: The amount and kind of spice may be varied to suit individual taste. 2 tsp vanilla may be used in place of spices.

Temperature of fat: 370 to 380 degrees
Amount: 2 dozen 3″ doughnuts

To Sugar Doughnuts: Just before serving, shake doughnuts one at a time in a paper bag with a little confectioners’ or granulated sugar.

To Coat with Nuts and Sugar: Dip warm doughnuts into warm glaze (see below), then into mixture of 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 tsp of cinnamon.

To Glaze Doughnuts: Add 1/3 cup boiling water gradually to 1 cup confectioners’ sugar. Mix well. Dip warm doughnuts into the warm glaze.
Or…..go to Shipleys))))

The good thing about the Old World Christmas Donuts…….no calories)))

Kodiak Crab Festival

Kodiak, Alaska May 26-30, 2011

blue crap christmas ornament

Celebrate the end of winter in late May at the Kodiak Crab Festival! Plenty of good food - crab legs, cab sandwiches, scallops, halibut, and chowder. Many events including survival-suit races where competitors run down a ramp, pull on awkward suits, swim across a harbor, and jump into a life raft. Or not.....whatever suits your fancy))) This year there is a retro "old time fair" theme with activities including music, games and more.

If you can't make it to Alaska.....this Blue Crab Christmas ornament from Old World Christmas will make the perfect keepsake. The Blue Crab is new to Trendy Tree this year. We also have Crab Louie for those that prefer the orange version.

The Blue Crab hang tag reads: Cancer, the crab, is the fourth sign of the zodiac. People born under this sign are traditional, sensitive, and nurturing. In ancient Greece, the crab was considered to be sacred, and in many eastern countries they are a good omen. In China the crab is a symbol of wealth and a happy marriage.

World's Largest Brat Fest!

Old World Christmas Bratwurst - Retired
In 2010 a record 209,376 bratwursts were eaten with relish - 172 gallons worth, to be exact. The event starts at 6: am on Friday, a.k.a. Take Your Brat to Work day, when you can buy a brat-to-go!

For more information visit bratfest.com

Our Brats can be kept for years and years! Plain or with relish.... The Brat above is a retired Christmas ornament from Merck Family's Old World Christmas.....we only have a few of these left and they will be gone forever. The hang tag on this ornament reads: The word Bratwurst comes from two German words: "Brat" which means to fry and "Wurst" which means sausage. Cooked up crispy on the outside and hot and juicy on the inside, they are served with a variety of toppings. "Brats" are a favorite food at ballparks, at games and picnics.

This year, we received a dressed Brat from Inge-Glas of Germany. This is a Bavarian Brat on a bun with mustard. This ornament will be arriving this summer to Trendy Tree.

Corinth Slugburger Festival

Corinth, MS July 7-9, 2011

Don't be scared by its unappetizing name: A slugburger is a deep-fried beef and soy-meal patty served on a bun - a beloved regional specialty. To see more information about the Slugburger Festival in Corinth, visit www.slugburgerfestival.com

Here's the "official" definition from the Slugburger Festival:

Locally, slugburgers have been overtly or covertly eaten for as long as most living Corinthians can remember. A slugburger is a burger made of a mixture of beef and some form of cheaper breading extender which is then deep-fat fried to a golden brown instead of grilled as common hamburger. In earlier days, cornmeal was commonly used as an extender in slugburgers and animal fat was used for frying. In modern times, soybean meal has become the ingredient of choice which adds some protein value to the creation and vegetable oil is commonly used for frying. The standard garnish for a slugburger is mustard, pickle and an ample dose of onions.

For many years, slugburgers were commonly sold locally for 5 cents or a nickel. A slang expression for a nickel was a slug and hence the most common explanation for the origin of the name slugburger. Another use of the term slug derives from coins which were substitutes and many have related to slugburgers which were substitutes for real hamburgers. Yet another meaning of the term slug in the meat packing trade is for a dressed forequarter of lamb or mutton which could have possibly been used at some point in time in a meat mixture as an additional extender to the more expensive beef. If you are particularly sensitive to fried food or if you over-indulge in slugburgers, you may feel as if someone slugged you in the stomach and some residents believe this is the origin of the term slugburger.

Finally, slugburgers should be served hot and eaten immediately. If they are not and particularly in the days when they were fried in lard, a cold slugburger could bear some visual resemblance to the garden pest and hence the name.

In other parts of the state or even in nearby towns, the burgers are simply known as "doughburgers." Now growing up in the 1950's and 60's everyone knew how to make a pound of hamburger stretch to feed a family of 6 or 8! Even my 1950 Betty Crocker Cookbook says.....all you have to do to make ground meat go farther.....is to mix it with Wheaties, bread or cracker crumbs, cooked rice or oatmeal and add milk to moisten. Flour was probably the most frequently added ingredient. And my own personal favorite one......wet loaf bread! Take 3-4 slices of white bread, moisten with water, then squeeze all the water out that you can......mix into the hamburger....it really works)))

This Cheeseburger Christmas ornament from Old World Christmas......isn't really a slugburger or doughburger.....but you get the point))

The American Bible Society

Today in history, the American Bible Society was formed in 1816 in New York City. IT is non-denominational, nonprofit organization that translates, publishes, distributes the Bible, study aids and other tools to engage people with the Bible. It's mission is to make the Bible available to every person in a language and format that can be understood.

The American Bible Society placed the first Bibles in hotels and also provided Bibles to the soldiers of the Civil War. It also was the first organization to translate the Bible into Native American language.

The American Bible Society's main headquarters is housed in Manhattan, New York City and contains the largest collection of Bibles in the Western Hemisphere.

In the aftermath of September 1, 2001 and Katrina 2005, it sent over a million Bibles and scripture portions each time to people affected by these disasters. It has also maintained its commitment to military, including producing a pocket-sized military Bible, developed jointly with the aid of Catholic and Protestant chaplains from all branches of the armed forces.

Visit the website of the American Bible Society for more information. (Information taken from Wikipedia and ABS)

At Trendy Tree we have two styles of Bible Christmas ornaments that make wonderful keepsake gifts. The first shown in from Inge-Glas of Germany. It is a black Bible from the "Faith" collection and has gold glitter details with Bible written on the front and a gold cross.

Hot Chocolate! It didn't Start Out as Hot Chocolate.

Cortez, the Spanish conquistador, was the first European to taste chocolate. Montezuma, the Aztec emperor of Mexico, gave a big feast and served "chocolatl" to his guest in a golden goblet. it was really a bitter mush, served stone cold. Cacao beans had been roasted and ground, then mixed with corn meal, vanilla, peppers, spices and herbs. Cortez learned that the cacao beans were used as money among the Indians. he procured some. Soon the Dutch, Italians, Austrians and French were experimenting with these beans. in 1637, a notice to a London newspaper announced that a Frenchman in Bishopgate street was offering an excellent West Indian drink, "jacolatte." Chocolate houses sprang up where society gathered afternoon to gossip and drink the new delicacy. Soon chocolate was being served by English colonist in America. (Betty Crocker picture cookbook, 1950)

Christmas Ornaments for Cake Toppers

We have a customer who is using the Country Church ornament as a cake topper for her wedding cake. Such a great idea and a beautiful keepsake for many years ahead.

The choices in Christmas ornaments are so vast, especially when doing a groom's cake....you could find an ornament for just about any sort of profession, hobby or any little quirk!

Children's birthday or party event cakes. This would be a great opportunity to use special keepsake Christmas ornaments for decoration and wipe off the frosting and put away until Christmas. How many times have we all used little plastic animals on top of a cake for a child. How much nicer some Old World Christmas cows, pigs, barn, horses etc. would look!

Our grandson Matt is into the "cowboy" thing right now and we may design his birthday cake in a fashion to use horses, saddles, cowboy boots, anything Western. I'll post pics!

Cobra Snake Christmas Ornament

Cobra Snake 12339 - New for 2011

Wikipedia: Cobra is a venomous snake belonging to the family Elapidae. However, not all snakes commonly referred to as cobras are of the same genus, or even of the same family. The name is short for cobra de capelo or cobra-de-capelo, which is Portuguese for "snake with hood", or "hood-snake".When disturbed, most of these snakes can rear up and spread their neck (or hood) in a characteristic threat display.

Three Billy Goats Gruff

Billy Goat Christmas Ornament - New for 2011

ONCE upon a time there were three billy goats, who were to go up to the hillside to eat grass and make themselves fat. The name of each one of them was “Gruff”.

On the way up was a bridge over a cascading stream they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a great ugly troll, with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.

So first of all came the youngest Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

“Trip, trap! trip, trap!” went the bridge as he trotted across.

“Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” roared the troll.

“Oh, it is only I, the tiniest Billy Goat Gruff, and I’m going up to the hillside to make myself fat,” said the billy goat, with such a small voice.

“Now, I’m coming to gobble you up,” said the troll.

“Oh, no! pray don’t take me. I’m too little, that I am,” said the billy goat. “Wait a bit till the second Billy Goat Gruff comes. He’s much bigger.”

“Well, be off with you,” said the troll.

A little while after came the second Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.
“TRIP, TRAP! TRIP, TRAP! TRIP, TRAP!” went the bridge.

“Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” roared the troll.

“Oh, it’s the second Billy Goat Gruff, and I’m going up to the hillside to make myself fat,” said the billy goat, who hadn’t such a small voice.

“Now I’m coming to gobble you up,” said the troll.
“Oh, no! Don’t take me. Wait a little till the big Billy Goat Gruff comes. He’s much bigger.”
“Very well! Be off with you,” said the troll.

But just then up came the big Billy Goat Gruff.
“TRIP, TRAP! TRIP, TRAP! TRIP, TRAP!” went the bridge, for the billy goat was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him.

“Who’s that tramping over my bridge?” roared the troll.
“It’s I! The big Billy Goat Gruff,” said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.
“Now I ‘m coming to gobble you up,” roared the troll.

Well, come along! I’ve got two spears,
And I’ll poke your eyeballs out at your ears;
I’ve got besides two curling-stones,
And I’ll crush you to bits, body and bones.

That was what the big billy goat said. And then he flew at the troll, and poked his eyes out with his horns, and crushed him to bits, body and bones, and tossed him out into the ravine and after that he went up to the hillside.

There the billy goats got so fat they were scarcely able to walk home again. And if the fat hasn’t fallen off them, why, they’re still fat; and so,

Yellow Swallowtail Butterfly

12164 MerckFamily's Old World Christmas
Measures approximately 3 1/2"
Mouth blown, hand painted, glass Christmas ornament from Merck Family's Old World Christmas. Yellow butterfly with beautiful glitter details.

From Wikipedia: Swallowtails differ from all other butterflies in a number of anatomical traits. Most notably, their caterpillars possess a unique organ behind their heads, called the osmeterium. Normally hidden, this forked structure can be everted when the caterpillar is threatened, or forced out with a gentle squeeze, and emits smelly secretions containing terpenes. The adults are often tailed like the forked tail of some swallows, giving the insect its name.
