New Blackberry Christmas Ornament

Picking blackberries.....not I'm not talking about electronic devices here))) I still help out my daughter and son in law with their website businesses, Trendy Tree and Trendy Ornaments and this adorable new Blackberry Christmas ornament just came in the other day and immediately it brought back thoughts of blackberry picking with my grandmother, who we called Mama.

28113 Old World Christmas Blackberry Ornament

Blackberry picking was also done on a hot sunny day and since we would be walking in brambles and bushes, we always had to wear jeans and long sleeved shirts......hot as well.....you know it was hot.

Picking blackberries with Mama always mean she picked in her white water bucket and the rest of us picked and put our berries into a coffee can or syrup bucket, something like that. Only her berries when in the white water bucket. She would always take a hoe.....because there was always a high chance that you might step on a snake. Never did ....but the chance was always there. There was also a high chance that you would get stung by a wasp.....yes, that happened many times.

The worst thing about picking blackberries though.....was the chiggers.... Mama would warn us, wear long pants, socks, long sleeve shirts and if she had her way, we would all have to wear bonnets too. If you've never worn a bonnet in the hot sun, you cannot imagine how suffocating hot they are.....most of the time we tried to get out of the house quick enough to "leave the bonnets behind."

We would walk down through the pasture looking for good berry vines. They would always be flowing over fences or old downed trees having been struck by lightening through the years or just rotten down. If the vines didn't yield many berries, we would hop in my granddaddy's truck and he would drive us to someone else's pasture or fence line. You didn't necessarily stop by someone house and seek permission to go into their fields and pick some berries.....you just did. Unless, they happened to be in the yard and you just wanted to be sociable I guess and stop and say hello. Most of the time we just went directly to where we could find good berries.

Pick only the berries that are nice and black, no red ones.....they aren't ripe. This was the instruction each time.....and don't eat them! Can't eat berries until they have been washed...... They surely looked clean enough to eat though......so we ate them anyway. I'm sure she could tell, but she didn't fuss too much.

The very moment we were finished picking berries and arrived back home....we had to remove all our clothing and get into the bath tub...."to get rid of the chiggers."  This hardly seemed necessary, because our clothes would not be soiled except where we had wiped our berry eating fingers a time or too. But Mama would insist.....and not only that.....she would put some Clorox in the water!

Clorox or Purex was good for killing chiggers she insisted.  Being children, I supposed we protested because of the smell of the water, but it didn't matter we had to do it anyway. Once we were decked out in clean clothes we would help wash the berries over and over and try not to mash them too much.

Fresh blackberries always meant a cobbler would be cooked. The rest of the berries would go into little white freezer boxes or bags and into the "deep freeze" for another day.

Back to the chiggers....you would think you had safely made it that berry picking day without picking up any of the tiny little mites.....but first thing you know.....there would be a little itch at your ankles.....then maybe behind your knee......then maybe around your panty leg......OMG....if you've never had one or more than one chigger embedded into your skin, you cannot image the intense itching and scratching that will result.

Chiggers were a cruel trick that God placed on us all.....I mean really....you think every creature should have a supreme and unique reason for it's creation.....but this one has alluded me. And just as a warning.....I don't care how bad, you think you need to go.......never, never. decide to drop your pants while blackberry picking even though you know you are hidden from the entire world.....you will live to regret it.

http://www.babyboomerblogger.com/2016/04/picking-blackberries.htmlWild blackberries are more tart than the blackberries you purchase at the grocery store. So if you're using an old recipe from your Mom or grandmother....you might want to cut back on the sugar a bit unless you picked those blackberries yourself.

My Mother used her Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook and I'm not sure if this is the recipe that she used for her Blackberry Cobbler but I wanted to share it with you.

My Grandmother's cobbler was always baked in the same round dented pan each time. Mother generally had a flair for making her cobblers pretty as well as tasty, so her's might be baked in a white casserole dish or something like that.....but they both were good)))

Blackberry Cobbler
"Cobble up" means to put together in a hurry according to Betty Crocker.
Mix together in saucepan                 3/4 cup sugar
                                                          1 tbsp, cornstarch
Stir in gradually                                1 cup boiling water
Boil 1 min, stirring constantly
and then add                                      3 cups of blackberries with any juice they have with them
Dot with                                            1/2 tbsp. butter
Sprinkle with                                     1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Make dough to drop by spoonfuls onto fruit mixture. Mix 1 cup sifted plain flour, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt 3 tbsp shortening (or butter) and 1/2 cup milk.   Note: if you are like me and use self rising flour, just leave off the sugar, baking powder and salt. Apparently self-rising flour wasn't as popular back in the 1950's as it is nowadays....or maybe it didn't exist.
Drop the mixture by spoonfuls onto your fruit mixture and bake in a moderately hot oven 400 degree for 30 min. Yields 6 servings.  *Calorie counts were not required of Betty Crocker in 1950....so just don't even worry about it......enjoy the Cobbler!  Serve with vanilla ice cream if you really want to impress))
So back to the cute little Blackberry Christmas ornament......what a perfect little keepsake for someone you love.

http://www.trendyornaments.com/28113-blackberry-old-world-christmas-ornament.htmlCollecting ornaments is so much more fun when you can associate it with a sweet memory from the past......so, buy an ornament, try making a blackberry cobbler and if you're brave enough......take those kids or grand kids blackberry picking this summer......but surely, surely, there is something now that you can douse the kids in so they won't get chiggers!!

Don't forget your hoe! Be vigilant, be ready.....there could always be a snake.

Whoever manages the Old World Christmas showroom must be have the most wonder imagination! Loved how this baking display showcased so many of their adorable food related ornaments.

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

Love this old (and it was genuine) cookbook for kids and the candy sprinkles))

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

This image shows an old crank handle egg beater…..then right beside it, a new fancy red mixer ornament. The Stand Mixer ornament was just introduced 2015 and will be available soon at Trendy Ornaments.

http://www.trendyornaments.com/stand-mixer-ornament-old-world-christmas.html

This cookie sheet is filled with the Assorted Spritz Cookie and the Sugar Cookie Assortment.

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

The hang tag on the Spritz Cookie reads: The Spritz Cookie glass ornaments embody one of the most popular traditions of the holiday season – creating special treats! Baking delicious cookies in festive shapes started years ago and continues on today as a favorite holiday activity.

http://www.trendyornaments.com/assorted-spritz-cookie-christmas-ornament-old-world-christmas.html
The hang tag on the Sugar Cookie Assortment reads:  The Sugar Cookie ornament depicts one of the most anticipated traditions of the Christmas season – the baking of eating of sweets! Creating elaborate and whimsical holiday cookies decorated with frosting and candies started years ago and continues today as a favorite family activity.

http://www.trendyornaments.com/sugar-cookie-assorted-ornament-old-world-christmas.html

I remember well trying to operate a cookie press in my younger days. It wasn’t easy! The cookie dough had to be just right, or you couldn’t push it through the press. I had much better luck making sugar cookies with cookie cutters))

I’ll have to share my old sugar cookie recipe at the end of the post))

Next we have a baking sheet full of Cinnamon Rolls! Goodness, you can almost smell them….maybe they had some cinnamon sticks planted around this display somewhere)))

http://www.trendyornaments.com/cinnamon-roll-christmas-ornament-old-world-christmas.html

The Cinnamon Roll ornament is 32167 and was introduced in 2012. It’s hang tag reads:  The Cinnamon Roll originated in Sweden, where October 4th is known as National Cinnamon Bun Day.  Today these sweet, spicy, gooey treats are enjoyed all around the world.  Whether served at breakfast, tea time, or for a coffee break, the Cinnamon Roll is a favorite worldwide.

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

The pan above contains Assorted Chocolate Cupcakes. They come with pink or white frosting with candy sprinkles on top. Isn’t that frosting realistic! Here’s an image of the whole cupcake so you can see the bottom.

http://www.trendyornaments.com/assorted-chocolate-cupcake-christmas-ornament-old-world-christmas.html

The Chocolate Chip Cookie is one of my favorite ornaments. It’s number is 32143 and it was introduced in 2010. The hang tag reads: The Chocolate Chip Cookie was accidentally invented in 1930 by Ruth Wakefield in Massachusetts. She was trying to make an all chocolate cookie, but the pieces of chopped chocolate she added did not melt into the dough – the Chocolate Chip cookie was born! Today it is the most popular cookie in the U. S. with over 7 billion eaten annually!

The next image contains a collection of these sweet treats – Chocolate Chip Cookies, Spritz Cookies, Sugar Cookies and the very popular small Cupcake in pink 32032. It’s about the size of mini muffins and makes a perfect party gift.

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

I love the bit of information on the hang tags…..I’ve learned so much! And I have to say I have done my share in contributing to those numbers))

Oh, I almost forgot…..gotta get that Sugar Cookie recipe for you)) This recipe is from the 1950 Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook. I can’t imagine how many times I’ve made this recipe. My mother was a firm believer in hands on teaching and she would hand me the cookbook when I was a little girl and say…have at it!

Sugar Cookies (Crispy, think, flavorful)

1/2 cup soft shortening (half butter)
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg

Mix first three items together thoroughly. Then stir in:
1 tbsp milk or cream
1 tsp flavoring (vanilla, lemon or a combination of the two)

Sift together and stir in 1 1/4 cups sifted Gold Medal flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
(typically we skipped the baking powder and salt and just used self-rising flour)

Chill dough. Roll very thin (1/16″). Cut into desired shapes. Place on lightly greased baking shee, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until delicately browned. Hot oven (temperature 425) Back 5-7 minutes. Amount: about 5 dozen 2 1/2″ cookies.

Now…I’m not sure about oven from the 1950’s, may they were just not as well insulated as oven today…..but if I tried to bake these cookies in my oven at 425 degrees…..they would be burned to a crisp….so use your own judgement))

Here’s a couple of images right out of the cookbook.

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

http://merckfamilyoldworldchristmasornaments.blogspot.com/2015/09/making-cookies-with-old-world-christmas.html

I have a great idea.....whip up a batch of your favorite cookies with your children or grandchildren....and give them a special cookie ornament to keep that memory alive for a long long time)))

Ornaments for Easter Baskets

Ornaments for Easter Baskets

martha-stewart-easter-basket

Easter is just around the corner! Hope you’re gathering your supplies to make those special Easter baskets for those special people in your life. The beautiful basket above is a hand crafted basket by Martha Stewart and you can click on the link to be taken to her site where all the directions are))

Easter is the perfect time to slip some special Easter bunny ornaments in a basket as a keepsake that will last far beyond the chocolate bunnies and marshmallow Peeps. We have several bunny style ornaments that would fit perfectly into most any Easter basket nestled down in some grass. Just be sure to remove the ornament before little hands can start digging in the basket since these are glass ornaments. Perfect keepsakes. Some you might be able to put a date on the bottom or back with a marker made especially for glass.

Here’s our parade of Easter bunnies from Trendy Ornaments:
102112-abracadabra-rabbit
102112 Abracadabra Rabbit

Abracadabra Rabbit is an Inge-Glas ornament (made in Germany). It is a clip on style ornament with a bit of mossy grass and he’s wearing a black top hat. 102112 Abracadabra Rabbit

Nestled in Grass is another Inge-Glas ornament, clip on style also with a bit of mossy grass. Sweet bunny face.
12350-flopsy
12350 Flopsy

Flopsy Bunny is an ornament from Merck Family’s Old World Christmas. This ornament brings back memories of the Little Golden Book – Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. Here’s a little history on the Flopsy bunnies.

Ms. Potter had a book all about the Flopsy Bunnies. According to Wikipedia: In The Flopsy Bunnies, Benjamin Bunny and his cousins Peter and Flopsy are adult rabbits. Benjamin and Flopsy are married, and the parents of six children called simply The Flopsy Bunnies. Food is not always readily available to the large family and they are forced to resort to Mr. McGregor’s rubbish heap of rotten vegetables for sustenance.
Mr. McGregor catches the six Flopsy Bunnies after they fall asleep in the rubbish heap and puts them in a sack, intending to sell them for tobacco.

When McGregor is distracted for a moment, the sextet is freed by Thomasina Tittlemouse, a woodmouse, and the sack filled with rotten vegetables by Benjamin and Flopsy. At home, Mr. McGregor receives a sharp scolding from his wife when she discovers the vegetables and believes her husband is playing a trick on her.
A sweet way of putting a Flopsy ornament in an Easter Basket is to couple it with a book by Beatrice Potter….along with a few jelly beans and chocolate of course))

12241hungry-bunny
12241 Hungry Bunny

Hungry Bunny is by Old World Christmas and he has his ears perked up while he munches away on a carrot.

Each Old World Christmas ornament comes with a hang tag that tells a little bit about the ornament. Hungry Bunny’s tag reads: Rabbits are very shy and frail animals. Having no natural means of protecting itself, the rabbit is therefore dependent on the kindness of man and other animals for it”s survival. At Easter time, the rabbit represents the renewal of this faith and abundant new life during the spring season.

These are just a few choices in bunnies that are perfect as Easter basket goodies….just browse through the Easter category to see the rest along with some other ornaments that are also suitable for Easter.

All these ornaments are mouth blown and hand painted. They make great keepsakes for special occasions.

The Garden Tomato

old world christmas garden tomato
The Old World Christmas Garden Tomato is a unique ornament that is very popular with our customers. Any time we receive an order for several of an ornament, we’re always wondering……what are they going to use this ornament for??

Last year, the Garden Tomato was used as a nice gift to a group of super ladies that raised tomato plants to sell as a fund raiser for a local youth group to go to camp. This year we received an order for several Garden Tomatoes for a family gathering………a chili sauce fest)))

Emily Edmonds and several members of her family, meet each year to cook up a batch of their homemade chili sauce. Now, we’re not talking about a nice size pan on the stove inside the house. They cooked up 360 pounds of tomatoes, onions and pepper ……outside…..the real old fashioned way!

The Garden Tomato ornaments were given as keepsakes for this family gathering. Emily’s sister-in-law dated the ornaments with a gold pen “Chili Sauce 2011″ and these ornaments will still be around after those jars of chili sauce have been put to good use.

And yes, I tried to get the chili sauce recipe…..but it’s a closely guarded family secret))) Thank you Emily for sharing this wonderful story about families taking time away from their busy lives to spend time with each other, carrying on tradition ……. making memories…..and chili sauce)))

"Chaser" The Amazing Border Collie from South Carolina

Today while reading our local community paper, The Pontotoc Progress, which is published weekly, there was an article in the magazine insert about a border collier from South Carolina.

border collie christmas ornament
Old World Christmas Border Collie Ornament

The article said that “Chaser” a border collie in Spartanburg, knows the names of 1,022 different items, believed to be the largest vocabulary for any dog. His owner, John W. Pilley, a psychologist, spent four to five hours a day teaching the pooch the names of hundreds of toys, which she can fetch by name……….next week I’m sending my grand kids over for training…..they can’t find anything.

Raspberry Festivals

Raspberries are plentiful this year as are the festivals! Here’s a few we found:

Northwest Raspberry Festival at Lynden, WA July 15-16, 2011

Hopkins Raspberry Festival at Hopkins, MN July 9-11, 2011

Bear Lake Raspberry Festival Days at Garden City, UT August 4-6, 2011

Raspberry Festival at Cottonwood, Idaho August 7, 2011

I’m sure there are more festivals this summer and plenty of farms to pick your own fresh raspberries…..great outdoor activity for the little ones……just be careful of the chiggers!

Here’s a recipe from Betty Crocker’s 1950 Cookbook for raspberry pie. The pie is actually Berries and Cream Pie and you can choose to make it with blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, or even peaches…….same delicious result.

Berries and Cream Pie

Make Pastry for one 9″ pie  (or do as we do in the Pence household.... buy one….)

Place 4 cups fresh berries in pie crust

Mix together and pour over berries:
2/3 cup sugar
4 tbsp. Gold Medal flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup cream (30%)

Bake until crust is nicely browned and filling set. Serve slightly warm.

Temperature; 400 degrees (a moderate hot ove)
Time: Bake 35-40 minutes

Now, if you need a Christmas ornament to make picking raspberries, attending a festival, baking or eating a raspberry pie a sweet memory……we have an ornament for you! Merck Family’s Old World Christmas Raspberries.

Interesting Garlic Facts:

China is the largest producer of garlic.

In the U.S., garlic is grown in every state but Alaska.

Garlic is mentioned in the Bible.

Its use in China was first mentioned in A.D. 510.

In the 12th century it was recommended as a palliative for the heat of the sun in field labor.

In the early 20th century, it was used to treat tuberculosis.

It was used an antiseptic and to prevent gangrene during WWI and II.

Garlic supplementation in rats, has been shown to increase testosterone levels…..just what we need….macho rats!

Garlic has been shown to be superior to placebos to lower systolic blood pressure.

The sticky juice inside the cloves is used as an adhesive in mending glass in China.

Yes, when eaten it does exude through the skin.

Garlic is know for causing …..halitosis……..you’re kidding…..

Sipping milk while eating garlic can help with the smell.

High quantities of garlic and garlic supplements can cause an increase in bleeding risk.

And my favorite……it wards off vampires, werewolves and demons.

National Donut Day!

National Donut Day is the first Friday in June.
pink and white frosted donut
National Donut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy. Many American donut shops offer free donuts on Donut Day. The Salvation Army continues to use donuts as a fund raiser.

Here’s a recipe for donuts (or doughnuts as Betty Crocker says….) from my mother’s 1950′s cookbook. I remember them being delicious!

Favorite Doughnuts

Beat well: 4 egg yolks (or 2 whole eggs)
Beat in:  1 cup sugar; 2 tbsp. soft shortening
Stir in:   3/4 cup thick buttermilk or sour milk
Sift together and stir in:  3 1/2 cups sifted GOLD MEDAL Flour; 2 tsp. baking powder; 1 tsp. soda; 1/2 tsp. salt; 1/4 tsp. nutmeg; 1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Chill dough 2 hours. Heat fat while rolling and cutting doughnuts.
1. Turn part of dough onto floured cloth-covered board. Keep the rest chilled. Turn dough to lightly cover with flour.
2.  Roll out gently 1/3″ thick. Cut with floured sharp doughnut cutter. Take board close to kettle to transfer doughnuts easily.
3.  Lift doughnuts on wide spatula, slide quickly into hot fat. Fry as many at a time as can be turned easily.
4.  Turn doughnuts as they rise to surface and show a little color. Fry about 3 min. to completely brown on both sides.
5.  Life from fat with long fork. Do not prick doughnuts. Drain over kettle, place on absorbent paper in warm place.

Note: Keep fat to use again: Clarify fat with raw potato in it (4 slices to 1 qt). When fat bubbles, strain into jar or can through 2 or 3 thicknesses of cheesecloth, over wire strainer. (The potato absorbs flavors and collects sediment, the remainder settling to the bottom. ) Keep in refrigerator in light-proof, tight, covered container.

Serve plain, sugared or glazed.

Note: The amount and kind of spice may be varied to suit individual taste. 2 tsp vanilla may be used in place of spices.

Temperature of fat: 370 to 380 degrees
Amount: 2 dozen 3″ doughnuts

To Sugar Doughnuts: Just before serving, shake doughnuts one at a time in a paper bag with a little confectioners’ or granulated sugar.

To Coat with Nuts and Sugar: Dip warm doughnuts into warm glaze (see below), then into mixture of 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 tsp of cinnamon.

To Glaze Doughnuts: Add 1/3 cup boiling water gradually to 1 cup confectioners’ sugar. Mix well. Dip warm doughnuts into the warm glaze.

Kodiak Crab Festival

Kodiak, Alaska May 26-30, 2011

blue crap christmas ornament

Celebrate the end of winter in late May at the Kodiak Crab Festival! Plenty of good food - crab legs, cab sandwiches, scallops, halibut, and chowder. Many events including survival-suit races where competitors run down a ramp, pull on awkward suits, swim across a harbor, and jump into a life raft. Or not.....whatever suits your fancy))) This year there is a retro "old time fair" theme with activities including music, games and more.

If you can't make it to Alaska.....this Blue Crab Christmas ornament from Old World Christmas will make the perfect keepsake. The Blue Crab is new to Trendy Tree this year. We also have Crab Louie for those that prefer the orange version.

The Blue Crab hang tag reads: Cancer, the crab, is the fourth sign of the zodiac. People born under this sign are traditional, sensitive, and nurturing. In ancient Greece, the crab was considered to be sacred, and in many eastern countries they are a good omen. In China the crab is a symbol of wealth and a happy marriage.
