Today in History March 23, 1858

Today in history on March 23, 1858, Eleazer A. Gardner of Philadelphia patented the cable street car, which ran on the streets by overhead cables.

According to Wikipedia, the first practical cable car line was tested in San Francisco, in 1873. Part of its success was attributed to the development of an effective and reliable cable grip mechanism, to grab and release the moving cable without damage Here's a image from Wikipedia.

Old World Christmas has it's own version of the streetcar or cable car.

The hang tag reads: Popular during the 1880s, Cable cars were public transit vehicles that ran on rails and moved by gripping and ungripping an endless cable that ran in a  conduit under the street. Due to the combination of steep hills and nostalgia, Cable Cars can still be found in San Francisco.

Today in History March 21, 1963 Alcatraz Closed its Doors

On March 21, 1963 “The Rock” closed it’s doors.

Wikipedia Image

Wikipedia: During the 29 years it was in use, the jail held some of the most notorious criminals in American history,[such as Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz), George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda (a member of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party who attacked the United States Capitol building in 1954),Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, James "Whitey" Bulger, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis (who served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate). It also provided housing for the Bureau of Prisons staff and their families

The closing of this prison makes us think about the  dangers that our police officer, soliders, firemen and other first responders experience every day of their life. We have some special ornaments to honor those who give of themselves to protect us all.

12350 Flopsy

Flopsy Bunny is an ornament from Merck Family’s Old World Christmas. This ornament brings back memories of the Little Golden Book – Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter. Here’s a little history on the Flopsy bunnies.

Ms. Potter had a book all about the Flopsy Bunnies. According to Wikipedia: In The Flopsy Bunnies, Benjamin Bunny and his cousins Peter and Flopsy are adult rabbits. Benjamin and Flopsy are married, and the parents of six children called simply The Flopsy Bunnies. Food is not always readily available to the large family and they are forced to resort to Mr. McGregor’s rubbish heap of rotten vegetables for sustenance.
Mr. McGregor catches the six Flopsy Bunnies after they fall asleep in the rubbish heap and puts them in a sack, intending to sell them for tobacco.

When McGregor is distracted for a moment, the sextet is freed by Thomasina Tittlemouse, a woodmouse, and the sack filled with rotten vegetables by Benjamin and Flopsy. At home, Mr. McGregor receives a sharp scolding from his wife when she discovers the vegetables and believes her husband is playing a trick on her.
A sweet way of putting a Flopsy ornament in an Easter Basket is to couple it with a book by Beatrice Potter….along with a few jelly beans and chocolate of course))

12241hungry-bunny
12241 Hungry Bunny

Hungry Bunny is by Old World Christmas and he has his ears perked up while he munches away on a carrot.

Each Old World Christmas ornament comes with a hang tag that tells a little bit about the ornament. Hungry Bunny’s tag reads: Rabbits are very shy and frail animals. Having no natural means of protecting itself, the rabbit is therefore dependent on the kindness of man and other animals for it”s survival. At Easter time, the rabbit represents the renewal of this faith and abundant new life during the spring season.

These are just a few choices in bunnies that are perfect as Easter basket goodies….just browse through the Easter category to see the rest along with some other ornaments that are also suitable for Easter.

All these ornaments are mouth blown and hand painted. They make great keepsakes for special occasions.
